Breaking Up Job Ties – How To Leave a Job That Is Bringing You Down
There are a number of reasons why you would want to leave your current job. In some cases, the work conditions are not what you had hoped they would be. The opportunities for advancement may be slim to none. Maybe you are simply tired of working in that industry and want to do something new for a change. Whatever the reasons, you may find that breaking up with your job may not be as easy as you think.
In order to break up with a job, it is important to make sure you have a clear understanding of what the job does and does not do for you. Maybe the job doesn’t pay well, but you have great coworkers. The benefits may not be that great, but your boss is really good about letting you have time off when you need it. Make a list of all the good things you receive with the current job, then make a second list of all the drawbacks. Putting it all down on paper will make it much easier to see if keeping the job is worth it, or if you need to get yourself out of that situation before more time passes.
Once you know what your current job does and does not provide, start thinking in terms of what you want to do with the rest of your life. Where do you want to be in ten years? Will you need training or a degree to get there? What can you start doing today to prepare for that future? In particular, what type of work would help you move closer to your eventual goal?
